Dowel Pins

What they are and how they’re used.

The dowel pin seems a simple enough product. A round, straight length, usually chamfered or tapered on one or both ends. Wooden dowels are a standard-use item in the furniture and cabinet trades. Plastic dowels are slowly replacing those. But, our focus is on the steel dowel pins, both alloy and stainless. Unlike their wooden or plastic counterparts, steel dowel pins offer both dimensional precision and a high degree of shear strength. These characteristics make them ideal for use in close tolerance applications.

Standard Precision Dowel Pins come in two major varieties – one is Slip Fit, the diameter of which is generally .0002 smaller than its mating hole, allowing for quick insertion and removal and for use as a locating pin during assembly processes. The other popular version is the Press Fit dowel pin, which is .0002 larger than the mating hole, requiring greater force to install and remove and offering secure placement during normal use. The choice between the two usually comes done to the perceived purpose of the pin in a particular application. Of the two styles, the Press Fit is generally the more commonly used.

At Richard Manno & Company, we manufacture and stock both types of dowel pins, making reference to the standards established by industry pioneers PIC Design and W.M Berg. The parts we make are equivalent in all respects, dimensional and performance, to those of our competitors. DFARS compliance is standard.

The demand for military grade dowel pins is increasing at a great rate, placing Richard Manno & Company at the forefront of manufacturers who possess both the knowledge and the capability to mass produce them while maintaining the level of quality expected in this category.
